Nick's Bar and Grill, King Street Wharf

Nick's Seafood and Grill

It was a lovely evening, not to hot, not too cold and with a cool breeze coming from the water. I am glad that
we were allocated to sit at the outdoor dinning area to enjoy the nice weather and the lovely view. I was long to try the "BBQ and Seafood Feast" at Nick's. For $25.50 per head, you can order unlimited plates of Boston Bay mussel, golden fried seafood plate with homemade tartare sauce, chargrilled BBQ plate and giant rips.

We started our night with a couple of drinks . From the menu, there were 2 non alcoholic mocktails, a cream based one and the fruit based one. It did not tell you what flavour they are nor what is actually in it. I crossed my finger and order the cream base one. It turned out to be a thick and rich mango smoothie with a swirl of raspberry sauce on top. It was full of fresh mangoes. With a little bit more of sugar syrup, it would be perfect !

Mocha ordered the "Loving Lychee". Which was a cocktail made with vodka, lychee liqueur, lime, strawberry, cranberry juice and crushed ice. But according to Mocha, the taste of lychee was minimal. Others just enjoyed a couple of bottles of beers.

The waitress was very kind to offer us to try one of each plate before we order our favourite dishes. So first up were the mussels. Surprisingly, there were 2 version of it; with tomato sauce or cream sauce. The mussels were fresh and sweet. The tomato sauce one was good, it was full of large cloves of garlic as well. Everyone like the mussels, but enjoyed the fat cloves of garlic even more. The mussels in white sauce was the favourite dish of everyone. It was creamy and seasoned with lots of parsley.

Next up was the fried seafood plate. The fish was the king of this dish. It was incredibly good. The thin layer of batter was well seasoned and crispy, the flesh was smooth and sweet. The homemade tartare sauce was delicious as well. Boosted the flavour for the calamari rings and prawn cutlets.

The chargrilled BBQ plate looked impressive. But ... it looked way better than what it tasted like. The chicken fillet was marinated with a red spice mix, it was tender and juicy, but it had no taste at all. Not even the taste of chicken it should has. The lamb skewer was well marinated, but the texture was had and dry. The chorizo was quite salty, but it was alright.

The last dish for us to sample was the giant rip, which was the dish I was waiting for and had a high expectation on it. Verdict ? It was pretty bad. It certainly looked smoky, tender and juicy, but it was dry and bland. Probably the worst rip I ever had.

After all these sample dishes, we have ordered more mussels and the fried seafood plate. Except for the mussels, all the dishes were served with a small bed of chips. For $25.50 per head, I think it is very good value and worth to give it a go. Just order the mussels and the fried seafood plate will do. The BBQ and seafood feast is on every Sunday and Monday from 6 pm. Booking essentials.
